| This blaze was even worse than the last as it evidently wasn’t discovered as soon as the last one. The building which faces Jones Street and sits directly east of the burned garage is owned by Jane Dalrymple If she had not awakened early, she and the resident of the downstairs apartment could have been overcome by smoke or even burned to death. This/these person(s) must be stopped before someone dies. (Photos by Janis Buhl) |

If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again. That must be someone’s theory on burning garages. At approximately 4:00 a.m. firefighters from Cambridge City and Dublin were again called to fight a blaze at 408 W. Main Street where they found the garage was fully engulfed when they arrived. This is the second blaze in a matter of two weeks at the property owned by Thelma Meers. Both fires happened in the early hours of a Sunday morning.
Jane Dalrymple, whose building sits just east of the burning garage, woke up to find her home full of smoke. When she went into the bathroom and pulled the curtain back to look out, the flames leaped toward her. She called the fire department and then checked on her neighbor below. January is National Mentor Appreciation Month
January 2010 marks Indiana’s first statewide recognition of National Mentor Appreciation Month.
Those who give of their time are greatly appreciated by not only the students they mentor, but by the staff at the area schools where community members volunteer to mentor children. It only takes 30 minutes to an hour each week to make a great big difference in the life of a child who may be struggling academically, personally, or who perhaps has trouble making friends with their peers.
Mentors have a positive influence on their students, providing them a friend they can count on whose attention is focused just on them. Mentors offer encouragement to stay in school, to study hard, to develop positive attitudes and to know someone believes they can succeed.
Students say their experience with their mentor has meant a great deal to them, and one elementary student said his mentor makes him laugh and he loves her smile. For more of this story please subscribe!
