Indianapolis TV Channels Now Available
Via Satellite
By Mary Anne Butters
Since the June 12 switch to digital
television transmission, many Wayne County residents have
been frustrated by the inability to view Indianapolis television
stations.
Or, as Judie Litton of Hagerstown put it, "I don’t
live in Dayton! And, I don’t want to be blown away by a tornado that’s
detected by Dayton TV after the fact! I want everyone to know about this! Now,
we can get Indy channels on Dish Network!"
The enterprising Dish Network subscriber, who lives north of Hagerstown,
figured a clever way to subscribe to Indianapolis TV stations years ago. She
rented a post office box in Mooreland, an eastern Henry County town that has
always been inside the Indianapolis TV market boundaries.
She convinced the satellite company that there was a "notch" in
the county line that included her home and her Henry County address entitled
her to subscribe to the Indy local channels. And, she did just that, driving
to Mooreland once a month to pick up her satellite bill from the post office.
Actually, after many years of being in the Dayton Designated
Market Area (DMA), Wayne County was returned to the Indianapolis DMA last fall.
Comcast Cable offers both Dayton and Indianapolis local channels.
However, even after the county was placed inside the Indy
TV boundary, Dish Network and DirecTV only allowed subscribers to receive Dayton
stations, until recently.
When Ms. Litton questioned her Dish Network repre-sentative
last week, she learned that she can abandon her Mooreland post office box because
Dish Network now offers Indianapolis stations as its new local channel option
to new customers in Wayne County.
Cable television is only available in Wayne County’s
largest towns, leaving small town and rural customers with only satellite or
over-the-air television service. After the June 12 switch, only Muncie and
one or two Indy channels could be tuned in some parts of the day with a roof-top
antenna in Wayne County. The new signals are much weaker than the old, analog
signals.
Dayton TV stations have lobbied hard to maintain Wayne County
in its service area. When Nielsen, the TV viewing research company, switched
the county to the Indianapolis DMA, Dayton TV executives stepped up their political
efforts to deny the Indiana county’s customers access to Indianapolis
stations via satellite.
DirectTV spokesmen said that Wayne County would be considered
for access to Indianapolis channels in about two years. However, Dish Network
now has that option available.
Dish Network and its authorized dealers have numerous introductory
deals available for as little as $14.99 per month that would allow Wayne County
subscribers to receive Indianapolis channels. Anyone interested may contact
the company at (800) 333-3474 or at www.dishnetwork.com.
